Bright & Airy Main Floor Remodel

For this renovation, we took a small kitchen with limited storage and turned it into a space with optimal storage and functionality. Our clients purchased their home many years ago and although it was no longer working for their lifestyle, they didn’t want to move. To ensure that these clients could stay in their home, we completely redesigned the main floor, moving the kitchen, removing walls and adding a window to bring more light into the space.

To solve the kitchen storage problem, we moved the kitchen into what was a sunken family room. Not only does this larger space provide more storage, it also improves the flow of the kitchen.

A window was installed over the new kitchen sink to let more light into the space. We also created optimal light design in both the kitchen and dining room by adding lights that illuminate work zones but can also be dimmed for mood lighting while entertaining.

To open up the space and create better flow between all the rooms on the main floor, we removed a load-bearing wall between the dining room and kitchen. To achieve this, we poured concrete footings in the basement to support new load point

The space is open-concept but also warm and inviting. We achieved this by adding darker finishes to the mostly white-on-white kitchen. The live-edge walnut peninsula top and island top, with a hand-oiled natural finish, add a feeling of comfort. And silk-like draperies contrast the wall colour with a white and chocolate stripe. The space is pulled together with custom furniture and finishes, like the dining room table, which is Canadian-made and seats 12 guests.
