How We Transformed This Kitchen
A linear design with a large island allows the space to be open to the great room for large get-togethers. A custom banquette permits a sunny breakfast area while being out of the hot cooking zone.
To add an overall focal point to the space, a custom dry walled surround was built to frame in the cooking area. The six-inch walls on the left and right side of the cooktop feature a recessed niche with a quartz windowsill for extra spices and decor. We completed the surround with a dark navy wall paint to create a bold and elegant statement.
An induction cooktop provides fast heat, is cooler to the touch and maintains an easy to clean cooking surface that suits the family’s lifestyle.
The custom white tile backsplash was finished off with a warm grey grout to create a desired pattern with the durability of true tile. A custom banquette was designed into the kitchen to replace a traditional freestanding table. The banquette permits a sunny breakfast area while being out of the hot cooking zone, as well as allowing a proper traffic flow to and from the exterior patio. The bench and back were made with a soft yet durable fabric to provide comfort while adding to the timeless appearance. The dark charcoal stained custom round table paired with all metal Louis style dining chairs provide an interesting contrast between transitional and modern interior design.
A custom quartz countertop is consistent with the elegant, yet durable theme of this kitchen design. It provides the ultimate in kitchen durability and has been paired with a cast iron under mount sink that is guaranteed not to chip crack or burn. The dark caviar-coloured sink allows for a unique contrast between the light and dark and ties into the other accents in the space. A touchless faucet, chrome strainer and walnut cutting board add to the overall functionality of the island as the main food prep and washing area.
I absolutely loved designing this kitchen from scratch for a new custom home build. I wanted the design to be elegant, chic and to embody a timeless appearance that would ultimately ignite a passion for cooking. I also sought to create an open space where family and friends could gather. The multiple seating areas create separate spaces with various view points within the space, yet are close enough together. I am thrilled with the outcome of the overall design and personally love the comfort of the banquette.
