The homeowners came to us with their goals of adding storage, and connectedness to their home. They needed a space where they could be in the kitchen preparing a meal, while their children were close by playing or completing homework. The existing kitchen was small and closed off to the rest of the home. It significantly lacked countertop space, storage and function. The existing family room was not visible from the kitchen, and the dining room was also separate and did not flow with the kitchen. We removed both of the kitchen walls that separated it from both the dining area and the family room. We relocated the kitchen entirely to the far exterior wall where the dining room used to be. This made the kitchen the hub of the main floor, and allowed the owner to cook while her children could be seated at the newly designed eat-in island, or hanging out in the family room, with full visibility of one-another. We also repurposed an empty and dysfunctional room into a mudroom and main entrance at the back of the home by adding storage cabinets, a bench seat, cubbies and hooks, creating a space where the family could enter, and store coats, shoes and seasonal items. This room entered onto the kitchen and each room of the main floor now has proper flow.
